First Gen: E53 1999 - 2006
The BMW X5 E53 was the first-generation X5 luxury SUV. It pioneered the "Sports Activity Vehicle" concept, blending SUV capabilities with a dynamic monocoque chassis to deliver BMW's signature driving engagement. Featuring a range of powerful powertrains, including inline-6 and V8 options, paired with BMW’s ‘xDrive’ intelligent all-wheel drive system. Its design combined a rugged, off-road inspired look with BMW's elegant styling cues. Offering generous passenger and cargo space, as well as a high level of luxury and technology for the time. It was a critical success which established the X5 as the leading premium SUV in the market and inspired an entire product category.
Second Gen: E70 2006 - 2013
The BMW X5 E70 was the second-generation X5 SUV. It built upon the success of the original X5 with a more refined and spacious design, offering increased passenger and cargo room, with capacity for a third row of seats. With updated engines, including turbocharged inline-6 and V8 options, the E70 offered improved on-road performance and handling compared to its predecessor.
New technologies such as active steering, adaptive suspension, head-up display, and the BMW iDrive system solidified the model's position as a luxurious and driver-focused SUV that combined utility, comfort, and BMW's signature driving dynamics. The first-ever X5 M released by BMW’s high-performance M division in 2010 showcased engineering excellence, delivering a race car level of dynamic performance in a high-riding SUV bodystyle.
Third Gen: F15 2013 - 2018
The BMW X5 F15 was the third-generation X5 SUV. It featured a more modern and aerodynamic design, while maintaining the signature X5 styling cues. The F15 offered a range of efficient and powerful engine options, including turbocharged inline-6 and V8 units. Plus, for the first time, a plug-in hybrid variant and a 4-cylinder rear-wheel drive variant were offered. Handling, ride and comfort were further improved, thanks to the availability of an air suspension system. The interior was more spacious and luxurious, with high-quality materials and the latest in-car technology, such as the BMW ConnectedDrive telematics system featuring a fully integrated Emergency Call capability. The X5 F15 built upon the model's reputation for blending SUV practicality with BMW's renowned driving dynamics.
Fourth Gen: G05 2018 - Today
The BMW X5 G05 is the current fourth-generation of the popular X5 SUV. It features a bold, muscular exterior design that retains the X5's signature styling cues. Under the hood, the G05 offers a wide range of efficient and powerful engine options, including turbocharged inline-6 and V8 units, as well as a highly capable plug-in hybrid variant. Expanded towing capacity to 3.5-tonnes reinforced the suitability of the BMW X5 for the Australian market. The spacious, luxurious interior offers the latest in-car technology and premium comfort features such as heated and chilled cup holders. In 2019 the first BMW iX5 Hydrogen was introduced to the world demonstrating BMWs dedication to the power of choice for its customers.
